The birth of Urban Globetrotter.

The birth of Urban Globetrotter.

Ok so by now you’ve heard a little bit about Urban Globetrotter.

You’ve probably seen a few links to a couple of the places you can follow us around the web and got the picture that we’re all about creating a network of like- minded people who love to travel, maybe do a little art or enjoy trying new foods in interesting places and basically having a bit of fun with it all.  Sounds cool right?  Some people have asked about the art side of things, whilst others have mentioned the food angle and how that relates to the overall outline.  Fair enough.  So what’s the deal then?

Well, I’m an artist and creative type and so that’s where that comes from, and to be honest we all like good food right?  I think creating a new painting from the ingredients on hand is kind of like making a nice dinner with what you’ve got there in the fridge, so it’s a natural fit. The cooking side of things has always been there, it’s just become a little more prevalent in recent times and I’ve always enjoyed writing too.  They’re all creative endeavours that are more art than science and so too is travelling.  Throw it all in a bowl and mix it and I guess it adds up to the birth of Urban Globetrotter.

The love of travelling is something that either bites you hard in a good way or just bites you hard and it’s not love, it a hassle, a chore, a pain in the bum, something to be worried about and to avoid. Well I guess you could sign me up in the first category. I really enjoy it.  Of course there’s always certain aspects of it that aren’t the best but that’s true of any endeavour and of life itself.  You’ve got to take the good with the bad but focus on the positives. That’s why I try to do anyway. It’s all an adventure.

So how has this all come about?

Well you can blame the rapid expansion of the web, social media and faster internet connections to start with and then add the fact that it’s become cheaper and cheaper to fly places!  Really though, Urban Globetrotter was born out of just feeling passionate about the creative life I live and the places I’ve been and the places I want to go, it’s just as much about the stories in between too.  I’ll tell you right now that I’m not the all time most travelled guy out there. Sure, I’ve been right around my home country, so much so that I can say that I’ve ‘planed, trained and automobilled’ across this great land to every city and almost everywhere in between and could recommend at least 101 places as must see. But that’s not the point.

The point is that in the course of organising my travels here and abroad searching the web for advice, deals and insights I came across a lot of bland descriptions, corporate speak and cut and paste reviews that all pretty much said the same thing about the same things.  Sure there’s some interesting blogs about individual trips but I thought to myself that it should be a little more creative and a little easier to find out what’s good out there, where to really go and what to see. What if there was a resource that offered unique travel stories, photos and tips from around the globe by people that have been there, like me, with my interests and sense of style?  A site that was original and engaging and creative. Well I hope there is one day and hope it’s called Urban globetrotter.

So that’s what it’s about. It’s about people with vision, funny people, creative people, cool people and if you’re reading this it’s about interesting people like you too.  So thanks for the amazing support so far on this journey, it’s been really humbling to have people connect, say hello, drop a comment or two and just feel the vibe of the project. This isn’t meant to be a cold front for a travel agency, a bookings site or a one size fits all travel guide.  No, it’s a lot more than that. This is about heart and soul, it’s about the real story in plain words, it’s entertaining and informative, it’s about you and me connecting with others to share experiences.  It’s about videos, food reviews, interesting places to stay and cool things to do and off beat things to see.  It’s sort of like the difference between going night clubbing in Tokyo and going to Disneyland.

It’s about the journey. Your journey.

It’s about being an Urban Globetrotter and the journey has only just begun.
